Glossary
The Sangh's own words, each in three scripts, explained once. The app and this site use them exactly as a trustee says them.
- સંઘSanghसंघ
- The Jain community organised around a derasar or upashray, run by trustees and a committee. One installation of ShreeSangh can hold several Sanghs, each fully separate.
- ખાતુંKhataखाता
- An account or fund in the Sangh's books. Every pledge and payment belongs to exactly one khata. The usual khatas are created with the Sangh.
- સર્વ સાધારણSarva Sadharanसर्व साधारण
- The general fund, from which the Sangh's ordinary running expenses are met.
- દેવ દ્રવ્યDev Dravyaदेव द्रव्य
- Money set aside for the derasar and the Jina images. It is kept strictly separate and never spent on general purposes.
- જીવદયાJivdayaजीवदया
- The fund for compassion towards living beings: panjrapole, animal welfare, feeding.
- વૈયાવચVaiyavachवैयावच
- The fund for service to sadhus and sadhvis: medicine, travel support, care.
- ચઢાવોChadhavoचढ़ावा
- An auction-style bid for the honour of performing a ritual or carrying an item during an event. Called in rupees or in mun; the winner's pledge goes to the item's khata.
- સુપન ની બોલીSupan ni boliसुपन नी बोली
- The bids for the fourteen auspicious dreams (supan) on the day Mahavir Swami's birth is read during Paryushan. They are called in mun by tradition, and the app shows the rupee value beside them.
- મણMunमन
- A traditional unit of weight (of ghee) still used as the unit for Supan ni boli. Each Sangh sets its own rupee value, for example 1 mun = ₹2.50.
- આંગીAangiआंगी
- The decoration of the Jina image for a day, booked by a family at that day's rate: ₹101 on a normal day, ₹201 on a special one.
- સંઘ પૂજનSangh Pujanसंघ पूजन
- A pledge to honour every person present on a day with a small amount each. Pledged per person and multiplied by the day's footfall.
- મેમ્બરશિપ લવાજમLavajam (membership fee)सदस्यता शुल्क (लवाजम)
- The yearly membership fee. Renewed each year for every household, usually in August.
- પર્યુષણParyushanपर्युषण
- The eight-day festival of reflection and forgiveness in Bhadarva. It is the busiest week of a Sangh's year for pledges and collections.
- ઓળીOliओली
- The nine-day Navpad Oli observed twice a year, with its own days, footfall and pledges.
- પ્રતિક્રમણPratikramanप्रतिक्रमण
- The daily ritual of reflection. Its timings are the most-read line of a Sangh's daily schedule.
